The department of Public Health Dentistry has been committed to promote dental care through organized community efforts supported with excellence in teaching the art of prevention.
The department of Public Health Dentistry teaches & guides the BDS students for 2 years from third year till the end of final year in the form of lectures and clinical postings and in internship for a 3 month posting.
During the course of 2 years topics like Public health, Preventive dentistry, Public health problems & programs in India, Nutrition, Environment and their role in health, statistics, epidemiological methods, National health policies, dental financing, Principles of management, Auxiliaries, structures & functioning of IDA, DCI are taught and during the clinical postings, the students learn about case history, indices and preventive procedures. The department of Public Health Dentistry encourages the interns to attend and organize camps for the socially weaker sections of the society, nearby schools, orphanages, old age homes, factory workers, organizations. They are also made to work with the NGOs to serve the society at large. A tobacco counseling cell has been established with collaboration with Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation (NSF) where interns counsel patients having any form of tobacco use habit. Short surveys & research activities are encouraged to be carried out by the interns.
Dental screening & treatment camps are held with support from other departments for children with special needs, Jail Camps, remote area camps. We have been an active participant in Colgate's Bright Smiles Bright Future program targeting the school children and has been successful in providing preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative care to the needy free of cost.
A well-equipped, fully functional and state of the art mobile dental unit caters to the need of the unreached under outreach programs run by the department. The department also has an oral health education museum containing a plethora of health education materials, models, charts, portraits and exhibits contributed by the undergraduate students as their project works.
The department has successfully hosted the basic research methodology workshop approved by Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Tobacco Intervention initiative (TII) workshops in association with Indian Dental Association, Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation (NSF).
The department currently a satellite center at Karjat, Taloja Jail and Virar at which we provide primary dental care to the underserved. Special & complex cases get referred to the specialty OPD of the college as per the need.
A fully Functional Tobacco Cessation Center called “Life First” is established in collaboration with Narottam Sekhsariya Foundation since 2017.It is located at ground floor of the College. Interns and Faculty of our college are regularly trained to carry out tobacco cessation.
Our College in collaboration with Ram Krishna Mission Ashram, Sakwar has established a Dental Satellite Center since 2009, in which patients are regularly screened and treated for various dental diseases. Treatments provided here are Scaling, filling of decay tooth, extraction of tooth and root canal treatment
Our College in collaboration with Ministry of Prison has established a Dental Satellite Center at Taloja Jail since 2017, in which prisoners are regularly screened and treated for various dental diseases. Treatments provided here are Scaling, filling of decay tooth, extraction of tooth and root canal treatment.
College has established 4 screening centers in Pen taluka of Riagad District. The four centers are Kasu,koleti,Shirke and Kharpale.The patients screened here, are regularly brought to college and are provided treatment at concessional rate.
College has signed an MoU with Life Trust India Organization in which regular screening camps are organized for underprivileged children of Anganwadi’s from Different slums areas of Mumbai
In Collaboration with Ministry of Health, Mega treatment camp was organized at Palghar on 3rd March 2019, in which 201 patients were screened and 76 patients were offered dental treatments like Extraction of teeth, scaling and filling of teeth.
Mega Free Dental Screening Camp at various Schools in Kharghar was attended by Doctors of YMT dental College and hospital on 19th June 2018 which was organized on occasion of birth anniversary of MLA Vivekananda Patil Saheb under the guidance of Corporator Gurunath Gaikar.7 schools with strength of 2550 were simultaneous screened. Total 92 doctors made this possible, of which 63 were interns, 17 PGs and 12 faculties.
Dept of Public Health Dentistry hosts every year Basic Research Methodology Workshops conducted under IMETTT (MUHS), Nashik. Every year Eminent Panel of speakers teach the basics of Research to first year postgraduate students and Faculty of our college.
Dept of Public Health Dentistry regularly hosts the Institutional Review Board (IRB) & Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) meetings where the research studies of students and faculty are presented, and Ethical Clearance is given for the studies which meet the all the criteria.
Department every year celebrates “No Tobacco Day” on 31st May where activities are carried out to bring about awareness regarding ill effects of Tobacco. Activities carried out are Lectures, Rallies and Skit performance.

We encourage student camp activities and projects including research projects in order to make students serve the community at their professional capacity. Incorporation of preventive strategies to maintain oral health & general health at large is our primary focus as this is the need of the hour for our country.

Department of Public Health Dentistry received Academic Excellence Award for the year 2018 for conducting 275 camps in Academic year 2018.
