Oral and maxillofacial Surgery by far is the only branch of dentistry, which I can say, goes beyond dentistry; treating diseases, injuries and defects involving both functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the head, neck and face region and is therefore rightfully called as the bridge between Dentistry and Medicine. It teaches all the students the basics of a surgical practice and helps them in understanding, managing and customizing dental treatment for the medically compromised patients. “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of education.” – Martin Luther King. Jr. Therefore the vision set by me for my department is “Raising the standard and quality of patient care by integrating, uplifting and upgrading surgical knowledge and skill through research and instilling virtues like love, care and compassion towards mankind for creating humane surgeons to serve the society with highest ethical standards. In my career as a teacher and educator for past eighteen years I have seen more importance been given to rote learning than practicing the skills and have also seen a dwindling respect and bonding between patients and doctors. My Goal for the department is “Creating humane and skillful surgeons for a better tomorrow.” I am confident, with the support from the institution, my dedicated staff members and my students, I will be able to fulfill the goal and work towards the vision.
