Department Overview
Oral Pathology and Microbiology, a specialized branch of dentistry is a confluence of basic sciences and clinical dentistry that investigates the cause, nature, process and effects of the various diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. Since its inception in the year 2000, the department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology at YMT Dental College & Hospital is involved in undergraduate training of Oral Anatomy, Oral Histology and Oral Embryology for I BDS students and Oral Pathology and Microbiology for II and III BDS students. Admission to the post graduate course commenced in the year 2007 and since then the department has made tremendous progress in terms of academics and infrastructure. The department is actively engaged in histopathological diagnosis of biopsy tissue specimens received from various clinical sources. It is equipped with state of the art facilities that include advanced diagnostic equipments like immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, polarizing microscopy and image analysis used for diagnostic and research purposes. In addition, various research activities, continuing dental education programs and scientific publications in reputed national and international journals are undertaken regularly.

The Department of Oral Pathology, Dr G.D. Pol Foundation YMT Dental College and Hospital, under the aegis of our Director, Dr.Kavita Pol, Dean,Dr. Meghna Vandekar and HOD, Dr. Sangeeta Patankar, celebrated National Oral Pathologist Day On 25th Feb 2020 to commemorate the birthday of Eminent Oral Pathologist Prof. Dr. H.M Dholakia who was the First oral pathologist in India
To celebrate this, Screening for oral lesions was conducted for the Non-Teaching Staff and Patients. This was followed by a series of lectures by Eminent speakers from the Department of Oral Pathology.

WORLD CANCER DAY 2021
YMT Dental College & Hospital in collaboration with Nirmaya Health Foundation & Satva Charitable Sanstha conducted "Oral Cancer Screening " at Sikh Gurudwara, Andheri on 4th February 2021.
Staff and Postgraduate students of Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Microbiology & interns from Department of Public Health Dentistry screened 108 patients.

The Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, Dr. G. D. Pol Foundation, Y. M. T Dental College & Hospital under the ageis of our patrons Dr. G. D. Pol sir, Dr. Kavita Pol- Nalawade & Dean Dr. Meghna Vandekar celebrated 2nd National Oral Pathologist Day on 25th February, 2021 on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Dr. H. M. Dholakia, First Oral Pathologist of India.
The celebration saw an overwhelming participation from undergraduate students & interns.
III BDS students & interns participated in Ted talk competition on the topic " Research frontiers in Oral Pathology & Microbiology " and I BDS students participated in Soap Carving competition.
The judges for the competitions were Dr. Deepa Das, Professor & Head, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology & Dr. Amar Katre, Professor & Head, Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry.
Dr. Sangeeta Patankar, Professor & Head, Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology addressed the students.

The Department of Oral Pathology & Microbiology, Dr. G. D. M. Dholakia, First Oral Pathologist of India.
Events such as Soap Carving competition, Poster making competition & a skit on the topic ‘Awareness of Oral Cancer’ were conducted. The events saw enthusiastic participation from undergraduate students & interns.
Dr. Sangeeta Patankar, Professor & Head, Department of Oral Pathology & Microbiology addressed the students and the participants & spoke on the importance of the event and its particular significant contribution in the field of medicine.
Our respected Dean, Dr. Meghna Vandekar gave the concluding words, congratulating and appreciating the efforts of the Department of Oral Pathology & Microbiology in organizing the event.

The Department of Oral Pathology organized a one-day virtual continuing dental education program PATHOEXCELLENCE 2022 on 22nd March 2022 at YMT Dental College and Hospital, Navi Mumbai, under the ageis of our patrons Dr. G D Pol Sir, Dr. Kavita Pol-Nalawade and Dean Dr. Meghna Vandekar.
Eminent personalities, Dr. Minal Chaudhary & Dr. Supriya Kheur were invited as guest speakers for the program.
Dr. Minal Chaudhary, Director professor, School of Oral Oncology, Sharad Pawar Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai, a distinguished and celebrated oral pathologist shared her knowledge on “Factors affecting postoperative survival of patients with OSCC: An area overlooked.”
Dr. Supriya Kheur,Professor and Head of the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, Dr D Y Patil Dental College and Hospital, Pimpri, Pune, an acclaimed researcher enlightened us through a journey of cases with an interesting slide discussion on “Histological Insights into Oral Lesions. “
A total of 225 delegates from the dental colleges of Maharashtra and all over India attended this successful event which was approved by the Maharashtra State Dental Council.

Oral pathology is the discipline of pathology that deals with the nature, identification and management of diseases affecting hard and soft tissues of oral and maxillofacial region. We, in the department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology at YMT Dental College and Hospital, prepare the students to perform routine histopathological, cytological and microbiological investigations. The students are also trained in the science of histology and pathology of oral and maxillofacial region utilizing state of the art digital microscopy under the guidance of highly proficient staff.
As the Head of the department since the last seventeen years with thirteen years of post graduate teaching, I am fortunate to be supported by experienced teaching faculty who are actively involved in UG and PG teaching program, clinical pathology, biopsy, exfoliative cytology, FNAC, imunohistochemistry, immunoflourescence& microbiological investigations. Our laboratory is well equipped with advanced research equipments which cater to various research activities conducted by the post graduates and the faculty of our institute.
The fundamental goal of our department is to provide innovative and quality education with high standard to achieve academic excellence and provide platform for the students to achieve their career aspirations.
