TITLE:  FREE DENTAL CAMPS IN TALOJA JAIL

YMTDCH is situated in the heart of Navi Mumbai, provides free dental services to patients near and far. The institute treats the patient with outmost care by OPD Clinic, Comprehensive treatment planning, and holistic approach. This is best exemplified by the screening and the treatment camps conducted for the jail inmates in Taloja jail. At Taloja Jail, there is a significant need for dental treatment, as many inmates do not have access to regular dental care. These camps provide an opportunity for our dental students to gain hands-on experience in treating patients with a variety of dental issues, while also contributing to the well-being of the community. YMTDCH believe that these camps are not only help our students to develop their dental skills but also to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable populations. YMTDCH ensures that these experiences will inspire our students to become compassionate and socially responsible healthcare professionals who are committed to improving the lives of those around them.
The purpose of the visits are to offer dental care services to those who are incarcerated and may not have access to regular dental check ups. Patients are evaluated for the presence of any dental pathology or any oral disease, this creates awareness, and suitable routine treatment like scaling, restorations, and simple extractions are performed at the camp venue itself.
YMTDCH provide services to the jail inmates as a part of community-based services by regular check-up and treatments in dental camps. Earlier our students were used to visit the Taloja jail on Tuesdays and Thursdays of every month. But based on the patient’s frequency and the treatment need we start to visit on only Tuesday. Once in a month oral surgeon visits the Taloja jail for the extraction cases. 
OBJECTIVES-

Promoting oral health education: In addition to providing treatment, dental students can also educate inmates on proper oral hygiene techniques and the importance of maintaining good oral health. This can help prevent future dental problems and promote overall health and wellness.

 

Developing practical skills: Student visits to Taloja jail can provide an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in treating patients with a variety of dental conditions. This educates students in developing practical skills that they can put in use in their dental practice.

Sustaining community connections: By providing dental care to inmates, it sensitises dental students to build connections with the deprived community and contribute to the improvement of public health.

Fostering a sense of social responsibility: Participating students visits to Taloja jail sensitises students to develop a sense of social responsibility and empathy for those who dont have quality access to the dental care.
PRACTICE

  • The department of Public Health Dentistry conducts camps and outreach activities to the Taloja jail.
  • Our dental student provides basic dental care to inmates including dental examinations, taking radiographs, oral prophylaxis of the inmates, fillings, extractions, and encourage maintenance of good oral health.
  • Our students visit Taloja Jail on every Tuesday in the month for the basic treatment like restorations, extractions and oral prophylaxis.
  • Specialist like oral surgeon and endodontist visits once in a month for the management of the difficult special cases.
  • The goal is to ensure that inmates receive proper dental care and to prevent dental problems from escalating into more serious health issues.

CHALLENGES-

  • Restricted entry for regular visits in the jail premises .
  • Follow up is difficult.
  • Jail premises does not have specific facilities to provide comprehensive treatment for complex dental problems.

          IMPACT-
There can be several potential impacts of a dental treatment camp in Taloja jail, including:
Improved oral health: Inspite of limited facilities, infrastructure YMTDCH strives to provide them with an opportunity to receive dental treatment and care. This leads to improved oral health outcomes, such as reduced tooth decay, periodontal diseases.
Increased awareness: A dental treatment camp sensitises to increase awareness about the importance of oral hygiene and dental care among the inmates.
EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS
Interim success can be evaluated by the frequency of the dental camps in jail and number of patients accessed and treated for which YMTDCH has received an appreciation letter from the jail authorities.

Title: INSTITUTIONAL EVIDENCE BASED CASE MEETS.

CONTEXT: YMTDCH constant endeavor has been to empower their every student to understand the diagnosis and apply treatment protocols bearing in mind the complete wellbeing of the patients.
PRACTICE: As a part of this initiative, at YMTDCH Institutional case meet are conducted often.
Case discussions are carried out by presenting different case scenarios from the perspective of a specific discipline of Dentistry. Clinical Diagnosis, Radiographic Diagnosis and specific treatment options are discussed at length by the students, supervised by the Heads of various departments, postgraduate guides and staff members.
This experiential learning, using methods of power point presentations to help the students organize their thinking process and build professional diagnostic as well as holistic treatment skills. Every discipline of Dentistry at the YMTDCH promotes this activity to inculcate values of learning, teaching and developing an interest in improving the quality of life for the patient.
IMPACT- The program includes constructive feedback, open communications, in depth discussions and critical analysis to uplift the student to reach great standards of diagnosis and management protocols.
It helps in better dissemination of evidence based special case management knowledge to postgraduate and undergraduate students.
EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS: Using the YMTDCH evidence based Case meets, students are ensured to the holistic management of cases and educate them. The institutional case meets encouraged learning of all aspects of dentistry and improved the comprehensive understanding of all dental specialties which enables the students to provide a better evidence based management.
