Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry

Message from the Desk of HOD

“Pediatric dentistry is an age-defined specialty that provides both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs.” (AAPD, 1999). Furthermore, it is the branch of preventive medicine that helps identify and modify markers and risk factors for health concerns over a life-course perspective. A pediatric dentist can witness and correct not only the important functions such as breathing, chewing and swallowing which go a long way in establishing health, but also the most important asset of a human face, the smile. They can play a vital role in sports safety and forensic science. Pediatric Dentists lead health-promotion campaigns in communities, and multidisciplinary teams for the management of conditions such as the cleft lip and palate. A pediatric dentist positively influences behaviours and attitude of a child towards health, in general. The uniqueness of being a pediatric dentist lies in the fact that they introduce children to an experience of multidimensional well-being beyond oral health.
